The Basics of Mixed Martial Arts

Mixed Martial Arts has been around for a while. It is fought in a cage and consists of different styles of fighting. Fighters use striking and boxing, kickboxing, ground game or wrestling and martial arts on the floor, and many other things to try to slow down or knock out their opponent. You can knock your opponent out for a win, get them to tap out and give up, choke them out, or you can get the referee to stop the fight because they see that the opponent is taking on too much damage that they will not come back from and it's all going to end very very badly. The sport has evolved as something that only guys watched on pay per view or on videos and did out in the yard, to something in huge arenas mostly in Las Vegas.

The past champions carried the sport for a long time. There were wars with fighters like Ken Shamrock, Chuck Lidell, Tito Ortiz, Matt Hughes, Randy Couture, and some of the other originators of the sport. There were different factions of the sport to begin with. The sport grew in America as well as Japan and Europe. There were several promotions for quite some time, UFC, IFC, Strike Force, and a few others. The UFC ended up buying out most of the smaller promotions and combined them all and even developed and took on more of their other weight classes.

Today it's fighters such as Clay Guida, Bones Jones, Anderson Silva, St. Pierre, The California Kid, Dan Hardy, and others that keep the sport going. There is a new line of fighter. Look into the eyes of the Diaz brothers and you will know what it is to see the true heart of a warrior. They honor those who fought before them and want to demolish whoever steps in their way of a championship.

The ultimate fighter show is what really catapulted the UFC into major main stream popularity and the fight between Forrest Griffin and Stefon Bonner. These guys just battled for three heart stopping rounds and bloody and sweaty and tired they hammered eachother until they no energy to carry on. They simply put everything they had into the fight. It was one of the coolest things I have ever seen. The determination to win was greater than any professional in any other sport ever that night and no one will ever be able to argue with me otherwise. These men simply crushed eachother. Griffin won, but both were awarded contracts and have had decent enough careers.

Mixed Martial Arts was probably started by the Gracie clan. They are the ones that produed possibly our greatest champion. He won fights against men two or three times his size. He stepped in and used the fact that he knew how to fight over the fact that the other man was larger. It always comes down to who knows how to do it better instead of who is larger and can do more push ups.

MMA will be here for a long time. It has caught on. Don't forget it people. This sport is for real.
