The Basics of Soccer

Soccer is a game that is very popular all over the world. When it is time for the world cup you can surely see that many countries in many different places go crazy. It is called football in most places, but of course in America we call it soccer because we have another sport called football. This is a free flowing game that to some people isn't exciting because goals are usually not scored at a high level. You usually only see three or four scores a game. It is very exciting, though, if you know the game and know what is really going on out there.

The positions are easily enough explained. There are strikers who are on offense and trying to score. They end up on the other teams end up a lot, but cannot be off-sides. If they end up behind all of the other team's defenders then that is a penalty when they get the ball. You always have to be on your goal side of the deepest defender and then beat them to the goal. The striker must be able to dribble, which means kick the ball and control it out in front of them and he must also be able to pass the ball to teammates. The teammates need to be able to stop the ball and make a move or further the ball down the field. They have to handle the ball the ball without touching it with their hands or forearm.

The only player that can do this is the goalie. The goalie is the player in front of the goal who tries to stop the other team from scoring. He must have a strong leg and arm as well as being quick to the ball and instinctive to know how to stop a team from scoring. The next position is the midfielders, who play a mix of offense and defense. They have to stifle the offense while trying to feed the strikers the ball. They need to make good passes, which are usually made with the inside part of the foot. This helps to control the pass and guide it to the right person or spot on the field so that it gets exactly where they want it to go. The defenders basically just play hardnosed soccer. They try to get the ball away from the offense and get it back down cleared to the midfielders or strikers for a quick break for a score. They are constantly fighting the offensive players for position.

The main thing about this sport is position, no hands, using the parts of the body you can, and being as aggressive as possible because you have to get after it. This game is one of the quickest moving games you will find. The clock rarely stops and play rarely stops, if the ball goes out of bounds it is quickly replaced and there is an over head throw in and the game continues. The referees must keep the game from getting chippy because of its frantic pace.
